Some information:
Please bring :
Ideal first projects:
I will have plant pots and picture frames for a first project, as well as tiles and other materials. A picture frame, house number or planting pot are ideal first projects to experiment with cutting techniques and learn about preparation, glues, grouts and finishing techniques.
If you have, bring tiles, glass pebbles, mirror bits, smashed crockery, shells…anything inorganic you would like to use.
General information
Tessarae: Some glass mosaic tiles and ceramic tiles will be available for purchase in the class. We will discuss in class where you can source materials and which materials are best for a particular project.
Cutters: There are a few different cutting devices for different materials: wheel cutters, tile nippers for tiles and other materials, glass cutters for stained glass, tile cutters for ceramic tiles, hammer for smashing tiles, hardie for smalti. It depends on your project which tools you require. I will have a variety of tools in class to try out. Please do not buy anything before you come to the class. I will have some Leponit wheel cutter there for sale at a special price.
Tile Adhesive: A number of different pre-mixed tile adhesives are available through hardware stores and tile shops. All can be used for indoor work using ceramic or glass tiles but if you are mosaicing something for external use, remember to check that the adhesive you are using is suitable.
Powdered tile adhesive (Megalastic, Ceramacrete, Asa Flex etc) is also available. This is cheaper than pre-mixed adhesive. When mixing the powder, a dust mask and rubber gloves should be worn. This is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
When using flat smooth-backed materials for mosaicing, such as stained glass or glass pebbles, it is better to use a glue such as Prep Multihesive (only indoor use).
Grout: It depends on your taste whether you grout your project or not. Some mosaic artists leave certain projects ungrouted.
Grout can secure tiles, change the look to your work and add another dimension to your project. Choosing the colour of grout is very important. It is worthwhile to prepare a sample of a few tiles and grout them in different colours. Grout dries to a lighter shade so leave it for a while before you decide.
A wide range of pre-coloured grouts are commercially available. These cost approx. the same as white grout. White grout can be coloured with different additives: concrete tints, ochres, food colouring, poster paint, wood stains etc. If you are mixing your own colour, make sure you have enough because it will be impossible to mix more of exactly the same shade.
Sealant: Tile and Grout sealant are commercially available. Only some projects, like outdoor mosaics, require a sealant. Some materials, such as slate, will also require a sealant to bring out the full beauty of your work.
We will talk about all these aspects of mosaic in class and you can try different materials and tools.
